House Construction Cost Calculator India
Estimate the preliminary construction cost of your house using built-up area, number of floors and construction quality. GharMetrix is designed to help homeowners understand the budget before discussing a contractor quotation.
How to calculate house construction cost
A simple planning formula is:
Total construction cost = Total built-up area × planning rate per sq.ft.
Total built-up area means the construction area across all floors. For example, a 1,500 sq.ft. area on two floors gives 3,000 sq.ft. of total built-up area.
What can change the final cost?
- Structural and foundation requirements
- Construction quality and specifications
- Flooring, doors, windows and sanitary selections
- Electrical and plumbing scope
- Labour, transport and site conditions
- Architectural complexity and finishing choices
Illustrative examples
The examples below use the current prototype Standard planning rate of ₹1,750/sq.ft. They are examples of the calculator formula, not guaranteed market prices.
House construction cost questions
Basic questions homeowners should understand before comparing contractor quotations.
Does this calculator give the exact cost of building a house?
No. It provides a preliminary planning estimate. Exact cost depends on design, structure, materials, labour, site conditions, specifications and the scope included in the contractor's quotation.
Should I calculate cost using plot area or built-up area?
For construction cost planning, the calculator uses built-up construction area. Plot area and built-up area are different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why can two houses with the same area have different costs?
Specifications can differ substantially. Flooring, doors, windows, sanitaryware, electrical fittings, structure, elevation and other scope items can change the final project cost.
What should I check in a contractor quotation?
Check the included scope, material brands/specifications, quantities, labour, transport, taxes, exclusions, payment schedule, timelines and items that may become additional charges.
